Tails from Sonic the HedgehogYear: 2010
Event(s): LouisiANIME 2010 Details: I thought this was like, the best, most amazing costume I had ever made. The pinnacle of my cosplay career. This ugly piece of work was my favorite accomplishment for a couple years and I am baffled. (Especially looking back on photos) Miles “Tails” Prower is one of my all-time favorite video game characters. I really love the Sonic franchise and I really, really love Tails. No lie, my e-mail was “milestailsprowerfan” for YEARS. All through high school, I dated a dude who also really loved Sonic and, because we were especially lame, we considered ourselves Sonic and Tails. (I mean, we went as far as trying to find my an orange dress for prom because of this, hahaha) Anyway, come 2010, we finally decided to cosplay our weird counterparts and wear them to a con together. The dress was made as simple as they come, it was just as if I drew a generic dress on paper and then cut the same exact shape out of fabric. The white part is literally just an oval hand sewn onto the front. We did actually make the drive to another town to go to Hobby Lobby for this, so it was made out of okay materials. The dress itself was just an orange cotton, but the white parts were a really soft blanket material. I had also purchased cute lace and ribbon that matched the color scheme. Yet I still somehow bought the wrong color zipper. The hem of the dress with the lace was a complete accident. I had cut it was longer than I wanted it, and then the hem fell down after sewing it, I realized I could layer it to make it cuter. The ugly tails and ears were also super quick and sloppily made, the black on the ears is Sharpie. One thing I did with this that I still do is attach the ears to a headband so they can be adjusted. That’s probably the one good thing to come from this creation, haha. The gloves were, yet again, a pair from a JROTC uniform that I cut the fingers off of. The black parts? Literally hair ties. As for shoes and socks, the costume went through several phases. Scrunched down socks and converse and thigh high socks with (open toe!!!) heels. (For real, I would use those stupid open toe heels with socks and tights all the time. That’s so ugly!) I remember being very conflicted when I decided to wear heels with it for my first real photo-shoot ever, but now I love heels! The higher the better! (Just not open toe with socks, please!) Before I finish writing this, let’s not forget to mention the fluorescent orange wig. My second wig ever. I made a good color choice, obviously. Convention photos - 2010 |
