Kairi from Kingdom Hearts 2Year: 2008
Event(s): Mechacon 2008 Details: I really wish I had photos in this costume! I’ve been searching for years and years and have never found anything online. I wish I would have been smart enough to have taken at least one myself, but little Megan did not think this far ahead. I had been originally looking online to buy a costume but quickly realized that maybe the week of the convention wasn’t the best time to start looking. It was in this moment that I decided, “YEAH! I CAN JUST MAKE THIS.” I told my family my plans and my mom reluctantly went out and bought me some (kinda ugly) pink upholstery fabric and I picked up a couple short (black) zippers and a black bed sheet at Walmart. This was before Walmart started re-adding their craft sections back into their stores and the closest hobby shop was 40 minutes away, so I really didn’t have much to work with. The literal night before the convention, I called up one of my cousins who I knew had a sewing machine and asked if she’d help me make this dress. She agreed and we got to work as soon as I arrived at her house. We stayed up most of the night sewing, and with our combined basic knowledge of sewing, managed to make Kairi’s stupid pink dress. We figured out how to add zipper super fast, and there were a lot of them. I think this is why I love the process of putting in zippers when most cosplayers resent it, haha. I can’t remember much about how it actually looked, but I do very much remember making a weird pleated white thing for the bust of the dress. The fabric came from some random article of cloth my cousin had in her laundry room and, still to this day, I do weird pleats like that for costumes. Bonus fact: I also tried to dye my hair red because I didn’t know about cosplay wigs for another few years. It didn’t work and my hair stayed brown. (Although it was the right cut!) |
