Coco Bandicoot from Crash BandicootYear: 2017
Event(s): Otakon 2017 Details: Coco was a costume I had been planning on doing for a long time but kept putting off. Finally, at the beginning of 2017, I decided it was time. I wanted this costume to be obnoxiously 90s, so buying a pair of overalls was out of the question. I went out of my way to find acid washed denim just for this. I spent a few days looking at photos of overalls to decide how I wanted mine to look and then patterned them out myself and began sewing. For such a simple costume, it has a lot of small details. Most of the seams are top-stitched with brown blue jean thread to closely resemble an actual pair of overalls or blue jeans. The top portion is double layered so you wouldn't be able to see any hem-lines when hanging down. Even the waistline had a band of pink fabric sewn into the inside just in case anybody looked into them since the overalls were baggy. There's also a zipper and snap on the side of the leg to help easily get in and out of the costume. I knew I wanted BIG SHOES for Coco but finding shoes with such thick soles in pink turned out to be quite the challenge. I ended up buying a pair of white shoes and dying them with some hot fuchsia Dye-Na-Flow. The Aku Aku mask was probably my favorite part of this costume. It's made out of a combination of EVA foam and craft foam, cut and dremel tooled to look like wood. The brown and red is spray paint and the yellow, white, and green are cheap acrylic paints. After it was painted, I distressed it a bit with some black acrylic paint and then top coated it with a not-so-clear top coat which actually added to the distressed effect. |
